SOUTH AFRICAN ROLLER HOCKEY FEDERATION
2OO8 ROLLER HOCKEY WORLD CUP PRESS RELEASE

South Africa will host the 38th edition of the Rolter Hockey World Cup in Vanderbijlpark,
southern Gauteng from October 25 to November 1, 2008.
The Roller Hockey World Cup will be held in Africa for the first time, further increasing South Africa's profile in the international community through a tournament which involves the world's sporting leaders in the United States, ths Netherlands. Brazil and Spain.
No less than 16 nations will contest the World Championships in the Vaal Region.
The Roller Hockey World Cup was awarded to the South African Roller Hockey Federation (SARHF) after soliciting assistance from the South African Government, and businessman Butityi Konki.
The International Roller Hockey Committee (CIRH), the world body, was so impressed by the case for South Africa that they awarded the country the righis to hosts in spite bf the sport's perceived lack of popularity in the country. The CIRH believed in the imminent groMh of the sport.
Konki, the Managing Director of BK Investments Holdings, felt privileged to be approached by the SARHF to assist in solicitingovernment support; and for raising financial backing for the event.
"From time to time we are called to arms for great causes," enthused Konki, who has been instrumental in ensuring that previously disadvantaged communities are exposed to the sport. "l am honored and humbled to be involved in such an exciting tournament.
We would also like to thank many people, including those in national government who believed in the groMh of sport, and Roller Hockey in particular, in ouriountry. We are also thrilled at the enthusiasm displayed by our financial backers."
Roller Hockey is an exciting fast game (in line with ice hockey) that is played in a confined 20 x 4Q m rink. lt is a highly paced game and each team is compiised of four outfield players and a goalkeeper. lt has an adrenalin rushing factor and highly exciting to watch.
The sport has a long-standing tradition in south Africa dating back to 1965.
lnternationally Roller Hockey dates back to 1921. lt was also an Olympic demonstration sport in 1992 and is curently re-applying for the status. It's roots lie in England and is now played across all continents.

It has predominantly been a sport dominated by the few privileged that could afford the equipment (protection gear, skates, stick: expensive to start up at approximately R 3 500).
The SARHF has embarked on an expansion program in line with the facilities and means available. Bearing in mind that almost all the gear has to be imported, this further hindered the federation's efforts to grow the sport.
The federation has successfully been able to grow the sport nevertheless, and have:
- developed local boots and sticks,
- atforded the opportunity for previously disadvantaged youngsters to play the game, the results have surpassed expectations in that in two years 25o/o of the youth national sides is now representative of our demographics,
- have a five-year development plan that will propel hockey into a fully empowered sport,
- the international Roller Hockey community has embraced our efforts and have thrown impetus behind our endeavors.
The president of the SARHF, Jock Coimbra, believes that the growth of the sport in South Africa rests with development from an early age.
"ln the past two years we have witnessed the development of the sport in vast areas of the country,"
said Jock. "The sport has played a role in integrating our youth. However we need to concentrate on the ages between six and nine year olds in oider to instill the required basic skating skills. The sport will complement the time these kids are spending at school together."
The level of tourism to be generated by the World Cup in the Vaal Region and surrounding towns, and the Gauteng Province cannot be understated.
Also the thrill of witnessing established playing nations at the door step will further entrench the sport in the country.
